🚨 The Gutter Report: Jimmy Kimmel Returns to ABC

Disney ends suspension — “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” back on air Sept. 23

The Suspension

Back on September 18th, I reported how ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! “indefinitely” after Kimmel’s monologue sparked outrage over his comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The move came after backlash from conservative media, affiliates like Nexstar, and even FCC Chair Brendan Carr, who threatened regulatory consequences.

The Return

Now, just six days later, Disney has announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Executives said they held “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel before deciding to reinstate the show. Coverage of the announcement appeared in People, AP News, and The Washington Post.

Notably, it remains unclear if all affiliates that pulled the show — especially Nexstar and Sinclair — will immediately resume broadcasting it.

Why Free Speech Is at Stake

The suspension raised alarms across the industry. SAG-AFTRA, the Writers Guild, and dozens of entertainers signed letters defending Kimmel’s right to speak freely. Critics pointed out that if a network can silence one of late night’s biggest voices under political pressure, then smaller journalists and creators are even more vulnerable.

Comedy has always been a frontline for social critique. If comedians risk censorship for controversial jokes, then the space for truth-telling in media continues to shrink.

Why Kimmel’s Return Matters

Disney’s decision to bring Kimmel back is bigger than programming — it’s a signal that corporate censorship has limits when the public pushes back. The fan protests outside ABC studios showed that viewers want authenticity, not corporate sanitization. His reinstatement is a victory for free expression, even if it came reluctantly.

This Is Why I’m Building Unmut’d

Moments like this are exactly why I’m creating Unmut’d — the first-ever social media platform for adults 18+ only. Unlike Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram — which censor content while pretending to be “free speech” platforms — Unmut’d will give grown people the space to talk honestly, argue passionately, and post without worrying about being silenced by corporate policies or political pressure.

Why 18+? Because the world doesn’t need another watered-down app where kids and corporations set the tone. The world needs a space built for adults only — a platform that respects free speech, accountability, and the complexity of real life. Unmut’d will be raw, real, and responsible.

Kimmel had Disney and ABC behind him. Most people don’t. That’s why Unmut’d matters — because we all deserve a mic that can’t be cut off when the truth hurts.

❤️ Fans rallied in support during Kimmel’s suspension — demanding his return.

📰 All eyes now on Kimmel — what will he say on his first night back?

What To Watch Next

  • Will Kimmel address the controversy directly on his return?

  • Will affiliates like Nexstar and Sinclair fall back in line?

  • And most importantly — how will this moment reshape the boundaries of free speech in media?
