Las Vegas, Nevada — Duane “Keefe D” Davis was found guilty on August 31 of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with Tupac Shakur’s 1996 killing. According to Reuters, jurors deliberated for approximately three hours before returning their decision.
The conviction marks the first time someone has been held criminally responsible at trial for the shooting that left one of hip-hop’s most influential voices dead.
🔎 How the Case Began
On September 7, 1996, Tupac was riding with Marion “Suge” Knight in Las Vegas when someone opened fire from a white Cadillac. Tupac died six days later.
As detailed in PEOPLE’s coverage, prosecutors said the attack was retaliation for an earlier MGM Grand confrontation in which Tupac and his entourage beat Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson. Davis was arrested in September 2023.

The prosecution’s argument was that Davis helped organize the attack and supplied the firearm. Under Nevada law, participation in a murder can establish criminal responsibility even when the defendant did not personally fire the shots.

The Associated Press’s trial coverage details how Davis’ recorded interviews with investigators, documentary appearances, and 2019 memoir, Compton Street Legend, became central to the prosecution. Jurors heard accounts in which he described passing a gun to the back seat of the Cadillac before the shooting.

As theGrio reported, his defense challenged the reliability of those accounts and emphasized the absence of surveillance footage, phone records, or other physical evidence placing him at the scene. Prosecutors argued that key details remained consistent even as parts of his story changed.
The jury ultimately found him guilty.
📅 What Happens Next
Sentencing is scheduled for October 13. Davis faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole; that punishment has not yet been imposed.
He remains held without bail and told the judge he wants to appeal. The judge explained that an appeal would follow sentencing.
Prosecutors also announced they would dismiss the gang enhancement because of witness logistics. The murder conviction remains.
For now, the jury has decided guilt. The next phase will determine Davis’ punishment and whether his conviction survives a legal challenge.
